Sweet Success

BY SALLY F. WHITE

An Atlanta hometown girl who graduated from Bauder College and attended Parsons School of Design in New York, Melissa Sweet began her spiraling fashion career specializing in girlish bridal and Southern debutante gowns. She opened a tiny couture boutique in a cottage on Pharr Road in the Buckhead area of Atlanta in 1996 and attracted young college-age debutantes and brides of her own generation who gravitated to her flatteringly whimsical, yet sophisticated dresses. Her following grew as she sold nationally to upscale stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman and expanded her home base to a larger Melissa Sweet store across from Lenox Square in Atlanta. In 2004, the legendary Priscilla of Boston multi-branded bridal company, founded by Priscilla Kidder 60 years ago purchased Melissa Sweet Bridal and gave the trendy fashion designer a dual role as design director for both the heritage-inspired classic Priscilla and refreshingly modern sentimental Sweet collections. The two brands will be at home in a hospitality-oriented shop in the heart of Atlanta on Peachtree Road.
